An Auckland memorial to NZCF’s founder Professor Peter Godfrey – dubbed “the father of New Zealand choral music” – will be held on Sunday 25 February 2018 at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell. A Choral Evensong at 5.00pm will be followed by refreshments and then a multi-choir concert at 7.30pm. This format of Evensong-plus-concert is one that many will recall from tours with ‘Prof’ in such venues as King’s College, Cambridge, York Minster and St Paul’s Cathedral … so we think he’d approve!
Not only is this an opportunity to pay tribute to Peter and the profound influence he has had on New Zealand music, but also a time for the many musicians who worked with him to sing in his memory. A massed choir will sing the introit, the ‘Nunc dimittis’ and the anthem during Evensong, and perform a bracket of songs in the concert. Repertoire will be advised in due course. Massed choir rehearsals will take place during the afternoon of 25 February, and attendance is a requirement for those who wish to participate other than in the congregation and audience. It is anticipated that you will be able to download the music in advance to help with preparation.
If you would like to sing in the massed choir and have not been invited through other channels, please contact Cathryn Wyllie at NZCF, email firstname.lastname@example.org, advising your voice part and whether you wish to participate in Evensong, the concert or both. Please also spread the word to those who may not otherwise receive this open invitation. All will be warmly welcomed.
Any proceeds will go the Holy Trinity Cathedral Music Trust, to enable the continued support of the Belinda Godfrey Memorial Organ Scholarship.
We look forward to sharing this opportunity to remember and honour Peter.
