THE NZCF ASSOCIATION OF CHORAL DIRECTORS
On Saturday 27 February, a group of 30 choral directors from around the country took part in a choral directors' colloquium in Wellington, which resulted in the formation of the NZCF Association of Choral Directors (ACD).
The full day's meeting reviewed past and present training given to conductors in New Zealand, what professional skills or tools a conductor requires and considered what events, workshops or opportunities might best service these needs. The meeting then discussed the shape of the new association under the topics of artistic features and administrative features, along with breadth of approach - meeting the needs of experienced as well as beginner conductors.
Guy Jansen and Karen Grylls as the Governance Board "conducting education" portfolio holders will lead the initiative. An interim advisory group of six was formed to help steer the association and develop agreed themes, and eight people offered to join sub-committees on website resources, conductor education, fundraising, and communication/publicity.
A full range of ACD membership benefits is to be developed, but in the interim a reduction in registration fees will be granted to members attending the NZCF Simon Halsey conducting or singing workshops as well as the International Summer School in Choral Conducting, planned for 29 December 2010 to 3 January 2011 this year in Wellington. For 2010, one idea to be explored will be the integrating of on-line learning, video-conferencing, local workshops and an annual directors' convention into a tertiary qualification.
