An opportunity for Big Sing conductors - Fine Tuning workshops 2018

In May 2018, the NZCF Association of Choral Directors is running in-school choral workshops in the East Coast, Manawatu/Whanganui, Wellington and Taranaki regions prior to The Big Sing (TBS) festivals. ACD Advisor Christine Argyle will work with the choirs in a 90-minute coaching session, helping them refine their chosen repertoire and sharing insights into what adjudicators look for in performance. In addition, the conductors will have a 30-minute one-on-one coaching/discussion session with Christine immediately after the workshop to answer any questions they may have.

Participation in the Fine Tuning programme also entitles the conductor and a few members of the choir to attend TBS Finale in Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre from Thursday 30 August to Saturday 1 September as guests*. Additional people may also attend, of course, but the usual admission charges will then apply.

Who can take part?
All schools in the East Coast, Manawatu/Whanganui and Taranaki regions entering The Big Sing 2018 can apply and acceptance is on a first-in-first-served basis. Up to three schools will be chosen from each region The only restrictions are:

  • only one choir per school may enter
  • conductors may only apply for one choir
  • choirs that took part in the 2016/2017 TBS Finales are not eligible for the 2018 programme.

When will the workshops take place?

  • Tuesday 2 May 2018 – East Coast
  • Thursday 4 May 2018 – Taranaki
  • Tuesday 8 May 2018 – Manawatu/Whanganui
  • Thursday 10 May 2018 – Wellington

“This was a great experience for my choir – we really enjoyed it. I learnt some additional strategies for getting the desired sound from the choir and it was great to have an external person reinforcing the things I had been telling them! This was a great opportunity – very valuable for us, thank you!”
(Fine Tuning participating choir director, 2016)
