Building on the success of last year’s SingFest, the Canterbury/West Coast NZCF committee filled the streets with song last month with the Christchurch City SingFest.
In warm, spring weather over the weekend of 24 and 25 August, 18 community choirs performed repertoire across myriad styles and genres at around 15 indoor and outdoor venues throughout the inner city.
Those who took part said they enjoyed the chance to claim a space and share their love of music not only with music-lovers but also delighted passers-by. Those spaces included parks, malls, and even the city tram, and audience members described the performances as uplifting and inspiring.
There was much goodwill from the Christchurch City Council and private property owners in giving permission to access venues over the weekend, and the CCC helped promote the festival. Special acknowledgement and thanks go to NZCF regional Chair, Rosemary Fisher, who contributed much time and energy to making the festival such a successful event.
The goal was to have “a city alive with song” and that was certainly achieved. SingFest will back in 2020!
