The fifty-strong Auckland Girls’ Choir (AGC) recently attended the week-long World Projects South Pacific Australian International Music Festival in Sydney, from 3 – 10 July. The festival of 950 participants, from Australia, New Zealand, China and the USA, included dance, bands and orchestras, plus the two Australian and five New Zealand choirs.
Each full day included clinician-led workshops, massed choir rehearsals and individual performances at many venues throughout the city including the Opera House and the Sydney Town Hall.
A highlight for the AGC was achieving a Silver Award in an individual adjudicated performance, in which the choir were assessed only on a recital of its own six pieces, and not compared with anyone else. Clinicians gave Musical Director Leonie Lawson positive feedback on the chosen repertoire and commented that the choir was on a sound course of training.
Commenting on the week, Leonie says, “The AGC girls were accepted so well and their enjoyment, energy and enthusiasm endeared them to audiences.”
“From a musical perspective it was a wonderful experience and opportunity: to perform in such big venues, hear other choirs and instrumental groups, to be tutored by excellent clinicians, to sing in the massed choir at the final concert, and receive a standing ovation after our performance in the Opera House!”
