As summer makes its – gradual – appearance once again, we’re already breaking out the beach towels, barbies and jandals and getting ready to sing our favourite seasonal songs and carols about… snow! This year, colourful Auckland chamber choir Viva Voce has chosen to accept the fact that most of our beloved Yuletide music comes from the opposite hemisphere, and even wants to celebrate it, in a special concert called ‘An Arctic Christmas’. And following a sell-out collaboration between the groups two years ago, Viva Voce has once again invited hugely popular (and aptly-named) Australian a cappella quintet The Idea of North to join them. Separately and together, VV and TION will sing a sparkling variety of traditional and modern favourites, including ‘The first nowell’, ‘The Coventry Carol’, ‘In the bleak midwinter’, ‘Jingle bells’, ‘Chestnuts roasting on an open fire’ and ‘Winter wonderland’ – songs inspired by the harsh northern winter and by what people do to survive and be happy at Christmas time.
