We are excited to announce that our biennial national conference, Choral Connect, will take place July 14 – 17 2021 in Auckland under the leadership of Artistic Director Karen Grylls. Choral Connect is the flagship event of the Association of Choral Directors (ACD), and is designed to inspire, refresh, and upskill conductors and choral musicians from across New Zealand.
A key theme in 2021 will be the choral traditions of Aotearoa New Zealand and the conference will include forums and presentations on performance practice, permissions and protocols around Māori and Pacific Island music.
We’ll also have international presenters Zooming in, conducting workshops, masterclasses and concerts encompassing a wide range of repertoire, and opportunities for our top practitioners to share ideas, insights and innovations.
Given the current uncertainty around bringing international presenters into the country, we are instead planning a series of Q&As with a variety of experts who will connect with us via Zoom. We will canvas our ACD membership about the types of topics and/or presenters they might like to see at CC21 and, while we won’t be able to take up every suggestion, these ideas will help shape this part of the programme. A discussion on themes and topics for CC21 will be held on the ACD Facebook group page on September 22 at 8pm. Be sure to join us!
A new feature of Choral Connect will be the establishment of two tracks: ‘Connect’ and ‘Conduct.’ The new ‘Connect’ track is designed for professional conductors and other choral singers, musicians, composers and administrators to observe plenary sessions and participate in more informal forums and discussions on a variety of topics important to the choral community. These sessions are a valuable way for the ACD membership to build relationships, share their expertise, and be inspired by the work of other artists. We hope that this track will encourage more of our membership to attend Choral Connect, as our national conference should be a great melting pot of ideas for our profession!
While all delegates will participate in plenary presentations and workshops, delegates on the ‘Conduct’ track focus more on conductor training and development in a similar format to previous conferences. Conducting classes in the ‘Conduct’ strand will include additional classes on a variety of topics, such as analysis & score marking, diction & IPA, and vocal pedagogy, with further topics to be announced.
CC21 will also see the return of our masterclasses and our evening concerts, with further events to be announced soon. We look forward to welcoming you to Auckland in July 2021!
