14 June 1961 – 12 October 2018
It is with enormous sadness that we have to advise of the death of Grant Hutchinson, the New Zealand Choral Federation’s Chief Executive since 2008.
Grant died at home in the early hours of Friday morning, surrounded by his family. He was diagnosed in July with a rare form of cancer and started treatment immediately, but the disease progressed devastatingly fast.
Grant’s contribution to NZCF has been immense. As the hub and face of the organisation for the past decade he has dedicated himself tirelessly to choral music in Aotearoa, overseeing massive growth in the number and scale of NZCF achievements, and hugely increased financial security.
Grant approached his illness as he did everything in his life: with vigour, optimism and determined hard work. He pursued every treatment option available to him in the cruelly short time allowed. He made detailed plans to ensure the future of his beloved family and was diligent in his attention to the handover of NZCF business. He continued to play the organ at St Lukes, Remuera until just three weeks ago, when he could no longer sit on the seat. He made ambitious and detailed plans for a concert to be his final conducting appearance – alas, it was not to be.
Grant has, not surprisingly, also issued detailed notes about the musical form of his own funeral service, which we intend to honour, on Labour Monday 22 October at Holy Trinity Cathedral. More details will follow about this farewell to him.
For now, our heartfelt love and support go to Grant’s wife Luca, his daughters Mira and Liz, and son Jono, and the wider Hutchinson family. Grant has left an enormous gap in their lives, as he has in ours, but he has also created a legacy of which he could be justly proud.
