Blue skies and a light spring breeze set the scene for a choral tribute and farewell to Grant Hutchinson at Holy Trinity Cathedral on Labour Day afternoon.
A chamber choir of 45, comprising Viva Voce and other choral colleagues of Grant, sang music he had selected. His organist colleagues Philip Smith, Janet Gibbs and Greg Cunningham accompanied and played some of his favourite voluntaries.
After tributes from Grant’s son Jono, his school friend Anthony, and NZCF’s own John Rosser, the choir and other choristers in the congregation surrounded the casket to sing a final blessing: John Rutter’s The Lord bless you and keep you.
The service was captured on video to share with family overseas. It was a contemplative and moving commemoration of the life of a good man and the music he loved. As John Rosser said in his closing remarks: “I believe all of us who knew Grant well are the better for having done so, and that the choral world has reaped huge benefit from the fact that he was able for a decade to make NZCF his life’s work and passion. We will miss him greatly.”
NZCF is forever grateful to those who contributed their skills, time, wisdom and experience to the service on the day, and to those who have made donations to our fund assisting the family with funeral costs.
