Music in Tomorrow's Schools

The current review of Tomorrow’s Schools offers the opportunity for individuals and organisations to have their say on the shape of education in New Zealand. NZCF feels it is important that music is part of the discussion in response to this review and that, in particular, the perspective of singing and choral music (as a critical pathway within music education in primary schools) is heard as part of the current consultation process. We support the efforts of our colleagues at MENZA (Music Education New Zealand Aotearoa) who have been advocating for music education at the Tomorow’s Schools Consultation Meetings, via the review survey (see below) and in written submissions. Linda Webb (Choirs Aotearoa Board member and part of the MENZA Advocacy Group) writes:

This government review of New Zealand schooling over the last three decades will potentially have very significant implications for policy and practice in schools for years to come. It is very important for individuals to respond in order to give particular perspectives in relation to the broad range of educational contexts they have experience of. When responding, we should take into account the significant theme throughout the report concerning how reform should be seen to benefit all school communities and, in the case of music, provision for all children and not just those who have the resources to ‘buy’ these experiences privately.

If you think that primary teacher graduates should be equipped to deliver a quality music programme, if you think we should have quality, locally-made music resources to support music teaching, if you think there should be a music advisory service for teachers and that every child has the right to a quality music education then we encourage you to go along to a consultation meeting and have your say.

Complete the Survey

An online survey is now open until 31 March for you to provide feedback on the key issues and recommendations in this report.

Written Submissions

Submissions can also be emailed to tomorrows.schools@education.govt.nz. Please feel free to use any of the arguments in the supporting documents below.

Public consultation meetings

Taskforce-led regional consultation meetings have been taking place from 14 February 2019. A list of all the events open for registration is also available here. You may also like to use these points from ‘Why should we care about quality music teaching in primary schools’ for advocating with teachers, principals, boards, officials, politicians, public and caregivers.

We strongly encourage you to make it to your local public consultation meeting to ensure music education has a voice at these events.
