A very successful Choral Connect ’17 was held at Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral and St Mary’s in July, where for five days, conductors and composers gathered to observe and learn from such international experts as Andre Thomas and Ēriks Ešenvalds.
Each day started with the very popular warmups led by Catrin Johnsson, followed by a plenary session. The delegates then broke into their various conducting and composing strands, before attending or taking part in conducting masterclasses and interest sessions.
On Sunday evening Andre Thomas led a gospel and spiritual workshop where he got all the very enthusiastic audience up on their feet, swaying and clapping, to allow them to feel how this music came about.
The well attended final night concert in Holy Trinity featured two guest choirs – New Zealand Youth Choir and New Zealand Secondary Students Choir, who, as well as performing their own items, combined to perform the premier of the winning composition. Following the concert a distinguished service award was made to Dr Guy Jansen in recognition of his work for ACD.
