University of Otago Associate Professor in Voice Judy Bellingham has been awarded an MNZM for services to classical singing.
Professor Bellingham’s involvement with music has spanned 50 years, as an opera singer and music teacher.
She told The Otago Daily Times when learning of the honour, “I was totally gobsmacked. I do what I do because I just love it. It’s not a job. I love teaching singing.” Her skill and inspiration has reached thousands of young New Zealand singers. She has offered guidance and mentoring as an adjudicator with NZCF’s secondary schools’ festival The Big Sing, and as the artistic director and a tutor at the biennial residential New Zealand Singing School in Napier.
She has also been a vocal coach and board member for the New Zealand Youth Choir, and has supported and encouraged young singers nationally.
Professor Bellingham is a past winner of the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal, and a recipient of the 1988 Elizabeth Baigent Mid-career Opera Bursary from the New Zealand Opera Society for services to opera.
NZCF offers its warmest congratulations on this wonderful honour.
