“Allan Purdy was a musical force to be reckoned with here in Taranaki. Born in New Plymouth, he spent 15 years as HOD Music at Spotswood College, after which he was appointed Music Advisor for Taranaki, a role in which he had enormous influence on students, teachers and the community alike. His gentle, approachable manner and quiet sense of humour made him perfect for this role.
In 1976 he joined Ars Nova Choir performing with them until his health began to deteriorate earlier this year. During this time he conducted 40 performances. Allan was conversant in all aspects of the choir……from choosing appropriate music, finding soloists down to the logistics of stage setting. All this was done with a generosity of spirit, good temperament and love.
Allan was also a member of the National Male Choir of NZ which he joined in 2004 as a tenor, singing in the International Eisteddfod in 2005. He was a member of the Taranaki Regional Committee of NZCF from its outset and was our local music reviewer.
Allan died 25 September 2018. He will be sadly missed by the Choral community of the region. Our love and support go out to Claire and his family.”
