At the Auckland region’s Annual General Meeting on Friday 28 April 2017, long-serving NZCF stalwart John Willmott was given the organisation’s first Distinguished Service Award. Unfortunately, John was not able to attend in person due to ill health but his brother David and son Geoff accepted the award (see photo below) on his behalf.
The Citation for John Willmott reads as follows:
Recipient of the New Zealand Choral Federation’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding and dedicated service to the NZCF Auckland Region, April 2017.
John became a committee member of the Auckland Choral Association (the forerunner to NZCF Auckland) in 1987. He subsequently chaired the committee from 1989 to 1991.
Following this, he became Chairman of the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Choral Festival committee (later renamed The Big Sing) and was coordinator of the event for nine years, between 1993 and 2001, while continuing to assist with its organisation after this time. John also sang with the Dorian Choir and conducted the North Shore Male Choir for 25 years.
NZCF is very grateful for the leadership and guidance that John has given to the Auckland Region, to the establishment of The Big Sing, and for the length of his dedicated service.
Sadly, John Willmott has since died. His funeral is to be held on Saturday 6 May at 11am at St Andrew’s Church, Symonds St, Auckland. A choir is being put together by Anita Banbury to sing in the service. If you wish to be part of this choir, please email Anita firstname.lastname@example.org mentioning your voice part.
