The American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) was founded 60 years ago, in 1959, with the aim of inspiring excellence in choral music through education, performance, composition, and advocacy. Today, ACDA membership consists of choral directors who represent more than one million singers across the United States.
NZCF Chair Juliet Dreaver, WSCM2020 Artistic Director John Rosser, WSCM2020 Event Manager Kylie Sealy and NZCF Operations Manager Cathryn Wyllie attended this year’s ACDA conference, and John Rosser filed this report:
A key item of our marketing plan for WSCM2020 was to attend ACDA’s biennial National Conference. With 5000 American and international conductors gathering in Kansas City, 500 days out from our own rather large choral event, it seemed to make excellent sense.
Most of the time we spent at our booth, enthusing passers-by about New Zealand and its Symposium, and meeting a surprising number of the choirs and presenters who’ve been chosen to perform. Now and then we wandered out into the small village that was the exhibition hall and talked to many of the other stall-holders, who were selling concert folders, risers, uniforms (from the demure to the worryingly exotic), tours, festivals, other arts organisations, US colleges, choral education systems, musical novelties, fundraisers like popcorn and chocolate (not as good as the Whittaker’s on our table)… and of course SHEET MUSIC from a host of publishers, with many rock-star composers in attendance! We think we’ve persuaded the most relevant ones to fly south next winter.
We would love to have attended the rest of what the Conference had to offer but had to leave the plethora of wonderful concerts, music reading sessions, workshops and seminars to others. However, we were able to do what many conductors go to ACDA for, which is to network. We made many new friendships, solidified old ones (particularly with our partners at IFCM) and held a very successful reception for 100 choral movers and shakers, as we announced the WSCM2020 line-up. At the end of it all, our little team is elated with the impact we, with the help of IFCM staff and Tour Time, had at ACDA. Our next task is to turn that success into registrations!
Even if you can’t make it to an ACDA conference any time soon, don’t forget that members of NZCF’s Association of Choral Directors (ACD) have complimentary one-year associate membership of ACDA, which includes access to the ACDA online resources and other membership benefits. NZCF will forward your membership details to the ACDA who will send you your unique membership login information for their website. Renew your ACD membership now
