Otago / Member choirs / The Melrose Singers

The Melrose Singers

The Melrose Singers was founded in 1974. The choir is made up of a group of women whose aim is harmony singing, music and public performance and expressing their enjoyment of fellowship.

The Melrose Singers was created in 1974 by the well known Effie Cockburn of 'Melrose', Green Island, Dunedin.

Over the years the group has benefited from the experience and skills of a number of other Musical Directors, two of whom were former pupils of Effie's.

Stephanie Hobbs is our current Musical Director. Stephanie is a musician, singer and music teacher.

The group celebrated their 30th Anniversary in 2004, at which life membership was presented to Effie Cockburn and Alison Law. In 2014 we are celebrating 40 years of performances.

in 2006, upon her retirement as our accompanist, Lorna Nightingale was made a Life Member, and in 2008, former Music Director, Alice Porteous was also made a Life Member.

The Melrose Singers Inc., is an all women choir, we meet once a week to rehearse and prepare for upcoming performances within the local community. We are committed to sharing our vocal skills, knowledge and experience with the local community for a variety of occasions and celebrations.
