In June, the WSCM2020 team welcomed five of the most influential people in the choral world to Auckland for three days of intensive meetings on our Symposium. Leading the two international committees (Artistic and Administrative) were, respectively, Tim Sharp – Executive Director of the 26,000-member American Choral Directors Association – and Gábor Móczár – President of the European Choral Association, an organisation that represents over 2.5 million choral musicians! Joining them were prominent music educator Ki Adams from Canada, distinguished choral director Jonathan Velasco from the Philippines and Jean-Claude Wilkens, past Secretary-General of the International Federation for Choral Music.
Their visit began with a powhiri from representatives of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, organised by Lisa Davis Haunui, one of the six-strong NZ contingent on the two WSCM committees. Our guests were then introduced at an informal function to NZCF Board and staff members, as well as to the five other committee members: John Rosser (Artistic Director), Juliet Dreaver (Project Manager), Karen Grylls, Christine Argyle and Peter Walls. Meetings over the following three days were frank, free-ranging, detailed and inspiring. John Rosser reports that from the very start there was a real sense of shared purpose in the group that only strengthened throughout their time together. “Our international visitors were too polite to reveal what expectations they came with,” he says, “but I think they went away more than satisfied with our planning, our venues and even our relatively mild winter weather. There’s no doubt that the whole team is eager to create the most dynamic, innovative and moving World Symposium yet – which is wonderful, because we in Aotearoa New Zealand won’t get to host it again for many decades to come!”
Save the date – 11-18 July 2020!
